CoMo pal and architect extrodinaire Barbara Bestor has unleashed her Silent Disco intalation at Sci-Arc in Los Angeles. Barbara is a true innovator and we simply can’t say enough about her and her team. If you’re in LA do check it out. Disco Silencio will be on exhibit at SCI-Arc Gallery until May 15. On April 8, 7pm, catch an exhibition discussion with architect Barbara Bestor and SCI-Arc Director Eric Owen Moss. Sci-Arc 960 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles.

Party for Architects

We’ve been invited to Vancouver Special’s Party for Architects Thursday May 6, 2010. Drop by for a couple of drinks and some design love. Julius Shulman Moves On

Sad to hear the news about Julius Shulman passing away last night. Julius will be missed by many including us here at Coast Modern. We were lucky enough to have spent several sessions with Julius including Gavin’s birthday dinner last year. The camera was rolling and we talked, drank and ate until late. Julius was the real deal and we learned a lot. He has been involved since the beginning, running around 1930s LA with Neutra and Schindler et al. A real privelage to have known him. He kept telling us to “Show them a beautiful life”… A toast to you Julius.

John Entenza’s original 850 square foot home from 1937. What a beautiful spot. The alcove in the car port used to have an outdoor shower. Apparently Entenza would shower off there after walking up from the beach. This was also the house where the Case Study Program was conceived. Dion Neutra FAIA

What can we say about Dion? Son and partner to Richard Neutra and keeper of the Neutra flame. We’ve been fortunate enough to have spent several sessions with Dion. The man believes in nature and his insight into modernism is truly profound. There is a real connection to the Neutra’s and Vancouver, a connection that we are uncovering. We were able to spend an afternoon with Dion and longtime client and friend Lou Scheimer. More info to come, in the meantime check Dion’s site here.

The first lady of Silverlake, our favourite Barbara Bestor. What a gal, such a talented designer fully connected to Silverlake’s arts community, this architect is an inspiration. Barbara showed us Silverlake’s hidden treasures and took us to a number of houses she’s designed. Grab a copy of her book Bohemian Modern if you haven’t already. The world can learn from Barbara Bestor.

Santa Monica architect Michael Folonis took us around LA and showed us some of his fine work and some fantastic restoration projects. He’s LA’s contemporary architect that understands where modernism came from and where it’s going. He gave us a great interview with huge insight into LA’s modernist past present and future. He took us for a fantastic lunch in Venice and we’re eager to spend more time with him soon. Check his web site here.
