CoMo pal and architect extrodinaire Barbara Bestor has unleashed her Silent Disco intalation at Sci-Arc in Los Angeles. Barbara is a true innovator and we simply can’t say enough about her and her team. If you’re in LA do check it out. Disco Silencio will be on exhibit at SCI-Arc Gallery until May 15. On April 8, 7pm, catch an exhibition discussion with architect Barbara Bestor and SCI-Arc Director Eric Owen Moss. Sci-Arc 960 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles.

We’ve finally connected with the one and only Barry Griblin here in Vancouver. We are so excited to have Barry on board with Coast Modern. We’ve long admired his early work and are excited to see his current work (the photos are incredible). Barry is a really important piece of the CoMo puzzle as he’s always believed in doing a lot with a little. Here’s a sneak peak at some of Barry’s West Coast wizardry circa 1974. We can’t wait to share with you the man they call Barry Griblin.

Our friends down at the Charles H. Scott Gallery are launching a new show that runs August 13 to September 3 at their excellent gallery on Granville Island. Do stop in to check the current crop of emerging Canadian architects, landscape designers and urban planners. Keep an eye out for CoMo pal Greg Bellerby’s book West Coast Residential for sale in their excellent bookshop.

Any architecture and design schools out there should snap up the bargain student price before they sell out. The AEC always put on solid events in the name of preservation and education. Abraham Rogatnick Moves On

Abraham Rogatnick passed away in Vancouver yesterday. Big respect to the man they call Abe, the man that studied under Walter Gropius at Harvard and did so much for Vancouver’s arts & architecture commuity. He was such a smart man with a gentle demeanor and cheeky wit. We were lucky enough to have spent a day with Abraham and he gave us the goods on the story of Modernism, believe me it goes deeper than you think. We shot over three hours of tape with Abe and will cherish every minute. Our thoughts go out to all that knew him along with a toast.

This video was shot after our interview with Abraham. Shot with my point and shoot still camera, Abe talks about how BC Binning moved away from a Southern Californian colour palette to a more appropriate North West palette. We already miss you Abe.

Get Inside The Binning House

Here’s a great opportunity to get inside the renowned Binning residence in West Vancouver. Designed by Binning in 1939, it’s one of Vancouver’s early modern houses and was a crucial part in Vancouver’s early modernist development. If you’re into modernism and are going to be in Vancouver July 1st, this is a must. The Binning Book with an introduction by the late Arthur Erickson is also worth picking up.

Arthur Erickson Moves On

West coast legend Arthur Erickson passed away today in Vancouver. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to put into words what it was like to spend time with him, but I do know he will be missed by many and his work will live on. We had the privilege of meeting Arthur earlier this year. The night started with countless rounds of Japanese Robata and Sake ending in a magical tour of his garden. It’s like the man was operating on a higher level yet he was so connected to what was happening at that moment. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the West Coast and Canada.

Another gem from North Vancouver legend Fred T. Hollingsworth. Featured in Fred’s book the Neoteric House truly wowed us as we stepped inside. The amount of natural light inside was astounding and so were the original blueprints! Putting the ‘proper’ in British Properties.
