Big thank you to everyone who came out for our 2 sold out shows in Vancouver as part of the DOXA Film Festival. We are thrilled our film is resonating with people and that we’re hearing it’s more than just an architectural love letter. We’ll be doing theatrical releases in Vancouver and Toronto in July to start so if you missed us at DOXA you can see us then. It is official, we will be premiering Coast Modern to a home town audience on Tuesday May 8th at the Vancity Theatre here in Vancouver. We’re thrilled to be part of what looks to be a superb documentary film festival. We attended the press launch yesterday and saw a sampling of the incredible films on offer. Check DOXA for complete festival info and early bird CoMo tickets. Stay tuned to our social channels for event info as we move into April. It’s been a long journey and we can’t wait to share the film with the world.

A Journey Through Time

Cool upcoming exhibit about the people who helped shaped West Vancouver. Take a close look at the defining West Van spirit through some remarkable photographs and artifacts. Note the superb indoor/outdoor connection and 45 degree cedar roofline in this 1911 photo. Event details below.

Exhibition runs from March 21 to April 28, 2012

As part of West Vancouver’s centennial celebration, the West Vancouver Historical Society presents A Journey Through Time, an exhibition of archival photos and artifacts collected through the past one hundred years. This exhibition highlights the development of the community by featuring the places and people who helped define West Vancouver.

Admission to this exhibition is by donation.

Quest to Sell a Masterpiece

A classic piece of westcoast modern architecture is up for sale in West Vancouver. Designed by Paul Merrick in 1971, The Merrick House has been lovingly owned by Lorne Rubinoff for over 30 years. Rubinoff is holding open houses each weekend until it is sold to the right buyer. Lorne recently invited Paul Merrick back to design a renovation and to treat the design as if the house was still his own. We shot the house for our film and can tell you that it is truly incredible, a very special place. I can only imagine what living there would be like. Barry Griblin

We’ve finally connected with the one and only Barry Griblin here in Vancouver. We are so excited to have Barry on board with Coast Modern. We’ve long admired his early work and are excited to see his current work (the photos are incredible). Barry is a really important piece of the CoMo puzzle as he’s always believed in doing a lot with a little. Here’s a sneak peak at some of Barry’s West Coast wizardry circa 1974. We can’t wait to share with you the man they call Barry Griblin.

Our friends down at the Charles H. Scott Gallery are launching a new show that runs August 13 to September 3 at their excellent gallery on Granville Island. Do stop in to check the current crop of emerging Canadian architects, landscape designers and urban planners. Had another incredible interview session with Vancouver furniture maverick Russell Baker at Bombast Furniture in Vancouver. The man is always 7 steps ahead of the curve. If you’re in Vancouver, check out his excellent retail space next to Ming Wo on the edge of Vancouver’s Chinatown. His art collection is worth the trip alone. Check Gary Lee-Nova’s original “Columbia Vista Vision” from 1968 on the wall. This piece showcases Vancouver’s incredible physcadelic past and Russell’s deep understanding of Vancouver’s art, design & architecture scenes. Here’s a map, tell Russell Coast Modern sent you!

Gordon Smith House II

What can we say, we managed to visit Gordon in his Erickson masterpiece in West Vancouver. What an incredible design on a magnificent lot. Gordon has had to paint the house much to Erickson’s chagrin in order to preserve the cedar. We love the original cedar of course but this green is actually quite excellent. If anyone could mix an appropriate colour to paint this house it’s Gordon Smith!

This will be good, Journeys East—Arthur Erickson & Japan. Get the full story on Arthur Erickson’s years spent in Japan. Any architecture and design schools out there should snap up the bargain student price before they sell out. The AEC always put on solid events in the name of preservation and education.
